Home Automation and Energy Saving

by | Oct 25, 2022 | Product Insight

Introduction

The installation of home automation devices in your home is the simplest and most innovative solution to save energy and reduce the cost of electricity and heating bills.

In an era where technology has become part of everyone’s life, more and more people are choosing to equip their homes with a home automation system or at least smart devices for controlling lights and appliances.

Relying on home automation means living in a smart home, which improves the quality of life. The benefits of using technology in one’s home go far beyond the thought of improving the quality of one’s life, And the possibility of applying the technology by combining it with energy savings must also be considered.

But what do we mean specifically when we talk about home automation or home automation devices?
How can this technology affect energy savings and rationalization of consumption?
Can this technology really improve the quality of our life and the management of our home? The answer is yes!

Home automation and energy saving

Domotica is a compound word, made up of the Latin word “domus”, which stands for house, and the Greek suffix “ticos”, which indicates the disciplines of application. This is the discipline that aims to optimize living comfort through the application of intelligent devices, or the automation of home systems. The management of your home, through remote control via PC, tablet or smartphone, is now a reality within everyone’s reach. Scientific advances have made housing systems more interconnected and smarter, bringing about changes that can benefit our lives.

The article above briefly explains what home automation is.

The advantages of home automation are, however, indisputable. In particular:

  • favors energy saving, which is the most impactful element, because energy sources are managed in an automated and rationalized manner;
  • makes life smarter, as it allows total remote control of internal and external environments, through the use of electronic devices;
  • the interfaces are user-friendly, so you learn how to use them easily and in a short time regardless of the computer knowledge you have.

But let’s move on to the question of energy saving.

A home automation system guarantees the reduction of energy waste: the use of home automation devices is able to maintain energy stability, for example by adjusting the intensity of the lights through the setting of thresholds on the meter, shading systems of the house and those of heating, or make sure that an appliance (e.g. electric oven) is not used when another is in operation (e.g. washing machine), but it is also able to report any water leaks or gas leaks which could cause damage to our home.

Choosing to introduce smart devices into your home is a winning choice from many points of view.

One of the main problems that create skepticism towards the transition from a traditional electrical system to a home automation one is certainly the economic factor because it could in fact have a very high cost. However, home automation is a smart choice for several reasons:

  • energy saving is guaranteed, it can be as much as 25% of the total annual consumption and is mainly linked to light and heating consumption;
  • it also has an impact on the value of the property which will be higher than in the condition prior to the installation of the automated systems.

From this point of view, “I can only mention the SONOFF company that with its cheap but high-quality products meets anyone who wants to integrate home automation into their electrical system by making devices of different kinds available to the user, usable for any need that arises, easy to install and simple to use.” ( Michele Sammuri said )

How can we save money with home automation devices

In every home, there are consumptions that we cannot manage because some appliances do not allow us to limit them such as the small light that signals the standby of the television, which apparently is a negligible consumption but if it is added to the others and to all days can become significant. Therefore, the use of a smart device that cuts power to the TV when it is not in use or during the night limits this waste of energy.

The use of smart devices to operate the shutters allows us to save on the consumption of electricity and gas. If we make the shutters open by themselves when it is morning in order to let the light in, avoid using light bulbs, making the shutters close in the evening at sunset contributes to thermal insulation, if the shutters close by themselves during the hottest hours in summer, it allows you to save on the use of air conditioning, the same thing applies to awnings.

Home lights can be made smart to save power consumption simply by using a smart device together with the classic switch, and a proximity sensor that understands that no one in the room, so therefore there is no need to keep the lights on. Also remotely we can check if we have left the lights on and eventually turn them off.

The irrigation of the garden or vegetable garden can be decided based on the climatic conditions through temperature and humidity sensors, including the soil, allowing to limit not only energy waste but also water waste.

Using a smart thermostat helps us to save gas by allowing us to turn on our heating at set times and temperature like a classic thermostat, but also to use it remotely, allowing us to turn off the heating when we are away from home or turn it on while we are on the way back.

There are home automation devices that are able to control the consumption of electricity in our home and that give the possibility to choose thresholds not to be exceeded in order not to increase costs by also monitoring consumption in real time, or connecting smart devices for energy control. Appliances we can control single consumption and make sure that high consumption appliances cannot be used at the same time.

In conclusion, we can say that home automation improves our life but also helps us save.

SONOFF products suitable to be used for energy saving

SONOFF MINIR2: It can be used to obtain a light or a smart socket, remote control from the eWeLink app, decide the ignition times, and use scenes to work in combination with other devices.

minir2

SONOFF S55: Waterproof smart plug to be used outside our home, with remote control from the eWeLink app, scheduling of usage times, usable through smart scenes in combination with other devices. An example of use is the pool pump for children for which you can program switching on and off or for the Christmas tree in the garden.

S55

SONOFF S26: Smart plug for indoor use to be connected to appliances or lamps. You can decide the on and off times, use in combination with other devices via smart scenes, remote control from the eWeLink app. An example is to use it for the TV so that during the night hours or when we are not at home there is no power to the TV avoiding the standby light on.

s26

SONOFF TH Elite: Smart switch for monitoring temperature and humidity, can be used to control the boiler or air conditioner or dehumidifier by adapting the operation of the device based on temperature and / or humidity thresholds, and can be used in combination with other devices via smart scenes, remote control from the eWeLink app.

thelite

SONOFF POW Elite: Measurement of power, current, voltage and energy consumption of your appliances in real time on the LCD screen, remote control via eWeLink app, maximum load of 20A, power consumption data can be stored for up to 6 months, possibility to set the threshold of power, current and voltage. Once any conditions are met, the POW Elite will turn off to protect your appliances, use with programming of on/off times, it can be combined with other devices through smart scenes.

powelite

SONOFF DUALR3: Device to make rolling shutters smart. Remote control from eWeLink app, schedule of opening/closing times, can be used in combination with other devices via smart scenes, detects voltage, current and power values and counts energy consumption for you independently to allow reasonable control of the energy consumption.

dualr3

SONOFF SNZB-03: An infrared sensor that can be associated via scenes to other devices, for example, to turn a light on or off when we are in a room. Battery operated. NOTE: It requires a Zigbee hub ( see SONOFF Zigbee Bridge or Zigbee Bridge Pro).
