Automatic DST Adjustment for Seamless Smart Home Automation

Automatic DST Adjustment for Seamless Smart Home Automation

Introduction

We understand how frustrating Daylight Saving Time (DST) transitions can be. You’ve probably encountered situations where your smart devices don’t operate as expected—whether it’s a coffee machine starting an hour late or lights turning on earlier than planned. These inconsistencies can affect your overall smart home experience.

Why don’t devices automatically adjust when DST changes?

That’s exactly what we’re addressing! Starting in March 2025, firmware updates will be gradually rolled out to eligible SONOFF devices to automatically handle DST changes. Once updated, your devices will maintain accurate scheduling and reliable automation throughout DST transitions.

What You Need to Do:

To ensure a smooth transition and avoid scheduling issues, please follow these steps:

Update the App

Ensure that you’re using the latest version of the eWeLink app (version 5.13.1 or later) before the DST transition. This update is essential for correctly syncing time zone settings with your SONOFF devices.

Check Your Time Zone Settings

Navigate to Profile > Settings > Time Zone and verify that your time zone is correctly set.

Update Your Device Firmware

Visit the eWeLink home page and click on the banner to check for available firmware updates.

Supported Devices for Automatic DST Adjustment

The following SONOFF devices will receive firmware updates to support automatic DST adjustments:

Potential Issues During DST Transition

Here are some challenges you may encounter during the update process:

Firmware Update Failures:

  • Offline Devices: Ensure your device is online before starting the update, as firmware updates cannot be completed while the device is offline.
  • Update Duration:
Wi-Fi devices typically take around 5 minutes to update.
Zigbee devices may require up to 1 hour, depending on the device type (e.g., radiator valve, water valve).
  • Stuck at “Updating”: If an update appears stuck, try removing and re-adding the device.
  • Older Devices: Some legacy models may have hardware limitations that prevent firmware updates.
Note: If you prefer not to update the firmware, you can manually adjust device timers. For guidance, check our official support page.

DST-Related Timer and Data Issues:

  • Incorrect Timer Execution: If the firmware and app are not updated before DST, device timers may operate on the wrong schedule.
  • Energy Consumption Logging Issues: Devices without the latest firmware may record energy usage with a one-hour discrepancy, leading to inaccurate reports.
  • Device Sharing: Timer settings for shared devices will follow the owner’s time zone, and any changes made by the owner will apply to all shared users.
  • Mismatch Between Timer Actions and App Display: If you change your phone’s time zone (e.g., while traveling), device timers will continue functioning based on the original time zone, which may not align with the app’s displayed time.
  • DST Timer Execution: Timers set near or at the moment of DST transition may not execute precisely as expected on that specific day.

Firmware Rollout Plan

Firmware development is a meticulous process, so updates will be released in stages. We appreciate your patience and support as we ensure the best possible performance for your SONOFF devices.
