FAQ
1. What is the SONOFF Zigbee motion sensor?
The SONOFF Zigbee motion sensor is a wireless, low-power PIR motion sensor based on the Zigbee 3.0 protocol. It detects moving objects in real-time to trigger smart home automations—such as automatically turn on/off lights — or to serve as a home security device by triggering cameras, alarms, and sending push notifications to your smartphone.
2. How does the SNZB-03P Zigbee motion sensor work?
The SNZB-03P motion sensor uses passive infrared sensing technology to detect moving objects within its environment in real-time. It works by identifying infrared radiation contrast between a moving target (like a human or an animal body) and the ambient environment.
When a warm object moves into the field of view, PIR sensors detect a rapid change in infrared energy, triggering the device(like lights, cameras).
3. How to install the SNZB-03P Zigbee motion sensor?
You can install the SNZB-03P in 4 ways:
- Placing it on a desktop.
- Attach it to a metal surface via its magnetic base.
- sticking it to a wall with 3M adhesive.
- Fixing the base to a wall with screws.
It is designed for flexible mounting on walls, ceilings, or in corners.
4. Where is the best place to install SNZB-03P Zigbee motion sensors?
The best places include hallways, entryways, bathrooms, closets, and staircases. You should avoid placing it in direct sunlight, near heat sources, or behind materials like glass and acrylic, as these can block infrared radiation and interfere with detection.
5. Can the SONOFF SNZB-03P motion detector be used outdoors?
The SONOFF SNZB-03P motion detector is not waterproof and is designed mainly for indoor use.
6. Can pets activate SNZB-03P motion detectors?
Yes. SONOFF motion sensor detects movement based on heat signatures, so pets entering the detection area may also trigger the device.
You can adjust the sensor angle slightly upward to avoid detecting pets at lower heights.
7. How high up should I put a motion sensor?
The SONOFF Zigbee motion sensor can be mounted on walls or ceilings. It has a detection range of 6 meters (20 feet) and a detection angle of 110°.
You can flexibly adjust the installation height to suit different use scenarios.
8. Does the SNZB-03P Zigbee motion sensor use a lot of electricity?
No. SONOFF SNZB-03P Zigbee motion sensor is a battery-powered motion sensor, designed for ultra-low power consumption. It uses a single CR2477 battery, providing a long-lasting life of over 3 years.
9. Will the SNZB-03P motion sensor still work if my Wi-Fi is down?
Yes. As a Zigbee motion sensor, the SNZB-03P supports local scene execution. Automations can continue to run even if your Wi-Fi goes offline, as long as the Zigbee hub and connected devices remain powered.
10. What is the SNZB-03P detection range and angle?
The SNZB-03P detects movement at a distance of up to 6 meters (20 feet) and features a 110° horizontal field of view, making it ideal for hallways, corridors, staircases, and entrances.
11. How fast does the SNZB-03P Zigbee motion sensor respond?
SNZB-03P Zigbee motion sensor motion sensor supports rapid detection, triggering linked actions in as fast as 5 seconds after detecting motion or sensing vacancy.
12. Can I use the SNZB-03P Zigbee motion sensor for home security?
Absolutely. When motion is detected, it can:
- Trigger cameras to start recording
- Activate sound alarms via a Zigbee gateway
- Send real-time notifications to your mobile phone
This makes it a reliable motion-based sensor for intrusion detection and home security.
13. Does the SNZB-03P Zigbee motion sensor work with Home Assistant?
Yes! As a standard Zigbee 3.0 motion sensor, it is recognized instantly by Home Assistant through Zigbee2MQTT or the ZHA integration.
To use ZHA, you'll need to install a script—click the link below for the script and step-by-step installation guide: SNZB-03P_ZHA_Script.zip
14. How to connect the SONOFF Zigbee movement detector to the SmartThings platform?
If you have a SONOFF gateway: First pair the device with the SONOFF gateway. Then, use the Cloud-to-Cloud integration method. For detailed instructions, visit:

15. What could cause the SONOFF Zigbee motion sensor to be falsely triggered?
- Small animals are entering the detection area.
- Direct exposure of the sensor to infrared radiation from sunlight, car headlights, or incandescent lamps.
- Sudden temperature changes in the detection area are caused by heating or cooling devices.
16. Why isn't my SONOFF motion sensor detecting movement?
There may be several reasons:
- There are obstructions such as glass, acrylic panels, or walls between the sensor and the target, which can block infrared signals.
- The target is either stationary or moving too quickly.
- The ambient temperature is close to human body temperature.
17. How does the "Detection Duration" feature work on the SNZB-03P motion sensor?
By default, Detection Duration is set to 1 minute, meaning that the sensor will report "no motion" 1 minute after motion is detected.
The minimum configurable detection duration is 5 seconds. This setting can be used in automations, for example, to automatically turn off lights after no motion is detected.
